The ZTE Altair, at first glance, has the look of a Blackberry. It is built with a solid build, great-feeling hardware keyboard and quality display. Looks aside, where the Altair gets it absolutely right is by knowing its market and its own limitations. But, before you worry, these limitations aren’t a bad thing at all.
Smartphones are great, but they are also far more feature rich than most of us will ever need. Recent studies show that over 15% of smartphone use is made up of phone calls and texts. Online social media (Facebook and Twitter, mainly) came in pretty equal at about 10% each. Email was about 8% with everything else tailing off significantly. Watching video and listening to music was a perhaps surprisingly low 2% of what we do with our smartphones. Ah, I hear you say, that doesn’t add up to 100%. Well, no, the other 50%+ of the time the phone is sitting doing absolutely nothing. So do we need a smartphone?
The Altair answers that question with a very firm “no”. And here’s why not.
There’s no denying there are some great looking phones available today, and the Altair is one of them. But this isn’t a case of looking good being the beginning and end of things. The Altair is a compact bundle of rock solid performance. The likes of which gets forgotten all too often in modern design labs.
The star attraction for those who need a phone to be a phone is the terrific hardware keyboard. The keys may appear a little small for some more robustly built fingers, but this isn’t the case in practice. The key-shapes are designed to make double key hits far less problematic than it might appear. They have a firm but soft (if that makes sense) action to them.
The full color display is easy to navigate by way of the well-positioned D-Pad, and the on screen icons are clear and bright. Quad band 3G means access to networks in over 190 countries worldwide. The 2MP camera performs very well and produces images that are easily good enough for online use. Video capture is also available at 15fps, a very useful and not all that common feature in phones in this class.
The battery, may appear on the small side at 1000mAh. Yet because the Altair isn’t doing all the things that eat a smartphone battery like a hungry Yogi Bear eats carelessly left pic-a-nic baskets, you will still get a return of 4.5hrs talk time or 12.5 days standby. GPS is built in, as is MP3 playback and Bluetooth. You can expand the available storage with up to 32GB via a MicroSD card slot.
The ZTE Altair is called a feature phone for a very good reason. It has all the features you need, and none of the ones you don’t.
