Following the success of the original Altair model, ZTE have come right back and released a new version which covers all the same basis as the first, but manages to be even better looking.
All our phones are unlocked and covered by a no questions asked 14 Day Return Policy. See here for more details.
We loved the look of the original Altair, but we love the look of the Altair 2 even more. Slightly slimmer and slightly lighter, it is now enclosed in a case which doesn’t even make an attempt to be anything other than black and beautiful.
Another small but very effective design change is the change to the keyboard design. Previously the keyboard had a slight curve which meant it took a little bit of getting used to. This has now been straightened out and is a pleasure to use.
The evolution from version 1 to the Altair 2 is subtle but very noticeable in daily use.
The display, already amongst the best in its class, has been upgraded.
The camera has a new 2x zoom which makes the already great camera even more useful.
Quad band 3G is supported, with the very welcome addition of high-speed data capability. That means that everything is that much faster and smoother. GPS has been upgraded to Assisted GPS for better accuracy. Bluetooth is also included, as is the ability to play a wide range of music formats. Video capture is done at 15fps, with plenty of storage options available via the MicroSD card slot.
We mentioned that the Altair 2 is slightly slimmer and lighter than its older sibling. That is pretty remarkable when you consider how much ZTE have added to the original spec. Weighing in at just 3.24 oz, it’s easy to forget you have the Altair 2 in your pocket or purse. It’s quality build standard means the odd knock won’t consign it to history with the ever growing mountain of smartphones with unusable display. All that waste, just because someone momentarily rested it on a marshmallow.
The Altair 2 is definitely a case of evolution, not revolution, but it’s all the better for that. Rather than re-inventing their own wheel, ZTE have made it a little rounder, a little prettier and a little more useful. The overall effect is one of noddingly good approval.
If you don’t need an all-singing, all-dancing smartphone – and studies suggest most of us don’t – then the Altair 2 is an excellent choice. Here is a device which ticks all the right boxes and ignores all the not-so-right ones. To say you could do worse, is a gross understatement. You couldn’t really do much better.
