The Galaxy Mega range is Samsung’s lineup of phablet-style smartphones. With a huge, bright screen and plenty of hardware to back it up, the Mega 5.8 takes mobile movie watching to new heights.
The Samsung Galaxy Mega is fully covered by our amazing 14 Day Returns Policy.
Straddling the gap between the standard Galaxy range of smartphones and the Note tablets, Samsung have the Mega range. As the name suggests, we’re strictly in phablet territory here. The huge screen dominates the device while retaining all the expected features of a smartphone.
While we’re on the subject, the display on the Mega 5.8 is, well, 5.8 inches in size. If you’re wondering if that’s actually big or not, the iPhone 7 Plus is 5.5”. While the two devices are almost the same dimensions with the Mega 5.8 being ever so slightly bigger all round. The display on the Mega 5.8 is big, bold and bright. So watching movies on the road, or gaming becomes a whole new experience, and has to be experienced to be fully appreciated.
We’ve mentioned the size, and in full it measures in at 6.46 x 3.30 x 0.39 inches. Make no mistake the Galaxy Mega 5.8 is bigger than the average smartphone, but that’s the point of it. Despite this, it’s still comfortable to hold in the hand and never becomes unusable for most one-handed actions.
The rear camera is 8MP, with autofocus, LED flash, Geo-Tagging, face detection and HDR built in. The rear camera is also capable of capturing 108p Full HD video. The front camera, is selfie-ready at 1.9MP. That is plenty for images that will only really ever be viewed on the Mega 5.8 or online.
Dual band Wi-Fi with hotspot, and Wi-Fi direct for connection to authorized devices, together with DLNA capability to let you share data over a home network. Bluetooth 4.0 adds more device connection options, such as speakers, headphones, in-car systems and more. GPS with GLONASS is built in for maximum accuracy when using location services like navigation or those Geo-Tagged images we mentioned.
Built in storage is 8GB, with a MicroSD card slot for adding up to a further 64GB, which means plenty of room for audio files or a handful of movies.
All this needs a lot of driving, and the dual-core processor with dedicated graphics chip sure does it all comfortably. But a large display like on the Mega 5.8 draws a lot of juice, and so needs a battery that isn’t going to give up when the going gets a little bit tough. It’s as well then that Samsung have included a whopping 2600 mAh removable Li-Ion battery. Not only that but they managed to get the Mega 5.8 to squeeze out 12 hours of talk time or 440 hours of standby.
The bonus feature here is the fact that the Mega 5.8 is a Dual SIM device, meaning you can put 2 SIM cards into it, and get the best deals for both calls/texts and data. Often, data-only contracts work out much cheaper than a combined, all-in-one affair.
Like all our devices, the Mega 5.8 is unlocked for use on any GSM network in over 160 countries worldwide.
Make no mistake, the Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8 is a big smartphone. But it has a big heart to match and is big on both hardware and performance.
