Touchscreens are great, they really are, but they can also be a bit of a bother when it comes to typing emails or lengthy texts, as typos aplenty are the norm on the restricted size, on-screen keyboard. Thankfully, if such typing exercises are your thing, there is an alternative. The Samsung Flight II includes a full capacity touchscreen and looks, for all the world, similar to any other smartphone. However, the Flight II is also a, little thicker than some smartphones and this is because, craftily hidden away under the screen is a full QWERTY keyboard, making all those emails and texts a much smoother and satisfying experience.
The keyboard makes it clear that the Flight II is a device for communication. It’s not for gaming or watching movies, necessarily, but if you need to be office-ready when you’re on the move, having a full hardware keyboard is worth its weight in apps.
Speaking of which, as well as calls and texts of course, there are apps for email, a calendar, a task log and memo pad easily accessible.
The Flight II also provides the Opera Mini browser, which is just about the best option for mobile web use.
Its built-in music player makes access to audio files quick and easy.
A MicroSD card slot means you can add up to 16GB of additional storage, so you can carry your music collection with you easily.
Bluetooth is an added bonus, making connection to other enabled devices a breeze, including headphones or in-car systems, and A-GPS brings outstanding positioning for location services or navigation.
Voice memo and dialing is also built-in. There is now no more need to immediately write things down, or try to remember what you were thinking, just say it and play it back later.
The rear camera is a capable 2MP and can capture video as well as still images.
Its battery that can provide 5 hours of talk time or over 10 days of standby. Start thinking about which calls you will make.
Despite the addition of that QWERTY keyboard, the Flight II weighs just 3.49 ounces. That is about ⅓ lighter than many modern smartphones. Quite a remarkable achievement by the Samsung designers and engineers.
If you need a little more than a basic feature phone, but don’t need the commitment – financial AND mental – that a smartphone brings, the Samsung Flight II might be just what you need.
