Product Description
The Nokia Lumia 925 is one of those smartphones about which much seems to be written but little is said. It has got specs to rival any offering from Apple or Samsung when it was launched. The reality is that the Lumia 925 was more than worthy of being the Lumia (and Windows) flagship phone.
Included are great specs, a very decent camera, and a million miles away from the paranoia-inducing fragility of an iPhone or Galaxy S. These details make it a phone that isn’t just worth considering, it makes it a phone very much worth owning.
A Heritage To Be Proud Of
It may be true that Apple and Samsung are the two biggest players in the smartphone market nowadays. Not so long ago, Nokia was the only name in town. Unfortunately, somewhere along the way, Nokia didn’t see the enemy creeping up and quickly became embroiled in a war it wasn’t going to win. It went from being the king to being almost a minor distraction. Therefore Nokia had to take a step back and reevaluate how it was going to make a serious challenge.
Thankfully, someone in Sweden managed to come up with the Lumia range of smartphones. All of a sudden, the gap to the new big two didn’t seem so large. This culminated in the release of the 925. The 925 is a phone so good that it made people stop and think about whether marketing had overtaken quality. As well as if they shouldn’t be so quick to be seduced by slick advertising and cheap soundbites.
What Makes The Nokia Lumia 925 So Good
Wow, where to start!?
Thin, sleek with a very solid feel to the poly-carbonate shell and Gorilla glass screen. Speaking of the screen, it’s a 4.5”, AMOLED, HD beauty that is a match for anything else out there. In terms of brightness, clarity, and color rendition it’s simply fantastic. To keep up with such a high-quality display, it includes a high-quality camera. The 8MP rear camera with Carl Zeiss optics and built-in image stabilization fits the bill perfectly. Oh, and in case you were wondering, yes, it will capture full 1080p HD video at 30fps.
4G, Bluetooth 4.0, 2.4gHz and 5gHz Wi-Fi means connectivity aplenty. Add that together with a GPS that uses not only A-GPS but Glonass, cell ID, and Wi-Fi positioning was available to give you the most accurate positioning possible.
Packed into a rock-solid body is a dual-core processor and the best personal assistant available with Cortana. How long of the day will it last? Its battery is capable of 18 days standby, 18.5 hours talk-time, and 55 hours of continuous music playback. Somehow Nokia kept the weight down to a small 4.9oz. This makes the Lumia 925 a smartphone that fits the hand, the pocket, and the needs of any smartphone user past, present, or future.
What About Apps?
You hear lots of things about there not being enough apps available for Windows smartphones. Of course, the people who usually say this are people who’ve never used one. In reality, of all those 4 billion apps in the Apple and Google Play stores, only a fraction are any good and even fewer are good enough to make any real money.
Of those apps that are good and that do make money, there are versions available in the Windows App Store for virtually all of them. In some cases, the alternatives in the Windows store are better than similar apps for iOS or Android. It is disappointing that many reviewers can’t look past the raw numbers of apps available and see exactly what those apps are and how useful they are in reality.
In every case, the power of the Lumia 925 and the quality of its components means it can handle anything any app can throw at it. No sluggish responses or waiting around for a screen refresh. It all flies along beautifully and with apparent ease.
Windows Phone Operating System
If you can use a Windows PC, you can use Windows Phone. The following is for all Lumia phones, not just the 920. To transfer music and videos to your phone, all you need to do is plug the device into a USB port on your PC and drag and drop. Try doing that with an iPhone and you’ll be wishing you’d never bothered!
A nice bonus is that the Nokia Lumia 925 will quietly back up not just your photos, but your apps, phone book, and all texts. Should you need to ever reset the device back to its factory default, restoring all those is simple. You just need to log on to your Microsoft account during the reset process and the whole restoration is quick and simple.
The Last Word about the Nokia Lumia 925
With the hype that surrounds the release of a new Samsung or Apple smartphone, it’s sometimes easy to forget that the alternatives might be better. Windows phones are terrific devices, and Nokia/Microsoft just do it all better than anybody else. It might be hard to acknowledge a behemoth like Microsoft as the “alternative” choice. But the 925 is the perfect example of style and substance, as opposed to just style and clunky almost-substance that occurs elsewhere.
The Nokia Lumia 925 is a beautiful phone with amazing performance. Miss it at your peril.
