Nokia Lumia 640
As great as iOS and Android are in there own right, there can be massive advantages to using a Windows smartphone like the Nokia Lumia 640. It syncs beautifully with any Windows PC and has the best swipe keyboard of the lot. And, trust us, once you’ve used it you’ll realize how average-ranking the rest really are. It has probably the best looking operating system out there, as well as the best digital assistant by a country mile, with Cortana.
Oh you’ll hear all the usual gripes from non-WindowsOS users about the lack of apps in the Windows Store. But it’s almost certain that, even if there’s not a specific version of the apps you use every day, there will be a very capable alternative.

Il-lumia-nating – Nokia Lumia 640
We’ve already mentioned the swipe keyboard, and how good it is, but we feel it’s worth mentioning again. It built into the operating system, unlike Android and iOS which require 3rd party apps. It is also streets ahead in both recognizing as you swipe and predicting what you are going to type. Once the phone has a handle on your writing style, it’s not unknown to be able to type a whole text just by tapping the suggestions it gives above the keyboard. If you’ve never used a swipe keyboard, once you do you can never go back to a standard on-screen keyboard again.
If you’ve ever tried reading any smartphone in direct sunlight, you know how difficult it can be. Nokia, for years, included a polarizing filter over their screens, to reduce glare and improve viewing in bright conditions. Microsoft have continued this tradition since buying the company. The difference is quite remarkable from most smartphones. It makes using the Lumia 640 a dream, indoors or out. A built in “glance” mode allows you to simply cover the camera lens momentarily. The display will then automatically show the time or any one of a number of other notifications. It seems such a simple addition, but is another of those things you’ll wonder how you ever did without.
Nokia was, in its day, a legendary mobile phone manufacturer. It was renowned for providing the best call quality available. Thankfully, this was another feature that Microsoft avoiding letting slip through the takeover net. It’s clarity even in poor signal areas is as good as anything you’ll hear in a smartphone at any price.
Okay, No More Puns
Lumia phones are fantastic devices, and the Lumia 640 is one of the best in the range. Don’t fall for the hype of some other manufacturers and give it a go. If you’re a Windows user at home, the entire experience will already have a feeling of familiarity about it. The ease in which you can settle into the relationship like an old friend shouldn’t be underestimated.
At the risk of sounding like a stuck record, Cortana and the stock swipe keyboard are almost reason enough to buy the Lumia 640. But, when you add a magnificent display and all the OS skills that Microsoft bring to the table, you’re looking at a device that stands out not just in the Lumia range, but among all smartphones.
