Microsoft took over legendary, but troubled, Scandinavian phone makers Nokia in 2013. We all waited impatiently to see what was in store for what was once the most valuable mobile phone producer in the world. As it happens, Microsoft continued to produce great phones at even greater prices. It confounded some of the bigger players with the overwhelmingly positive reactions from users and critics alike.
The Nokia 640 XL is a bigger brother of the standard 640. It is one of Microsoft’s first forays into the world of consumer phablets (bigger-than-a-phone-smaller-than-tablet, in case you were wondering). Of course, it got the whole thing absolutely right. Conscious to appeal to as broad an audience as possible, Microsoft went for a plastic case. Yet it kept the build quality solid and robust, and pleasing to the touch.
The whole Lumia range has long punched above its weight, especially when it comes to the quality of the HD display. The raw spec means it shouldn’t be as good as some more heralded devices. However it is, and actually better in many cases. Add this to a user interface that is possibly the best on any platform, and using the 640 XL is just a joy. It’s got a scratch resistant Corning Gorilla glass, a light sensor and a proximity sensor. All of these push the Lumia 640 XL display even further into the next class of displays available.
The cameras on Nokia devices were always a cut above the pack. A 13MP rear camera, with LED flash and continuous autofocus when capturing Full HD 1920 x 1080 video at 30fps means great performance once again. Add in a 5MP front camera and you begin to wonder why this smartphone doesn’t cost twice as much.
It has a built in quad-core processor and dedicated graphics processor. To help you out, it can store up to 128GB of storage, weather it be files, photo, video or audio. 30 hrs talk time and 37 days standby time means that the 640 XL is a device that demands our attention. It has 4G with 3G fallback, Bluetooth 4, Wifi 802.11 b/g/n, Assisted GPS, NFC for contactless payment and file transfer. The ability use wireless screen share mean the Nokia 640 XL is a serious bit of technology at a seriously low price.
Running Windows Mobile means the 640 XL works seamlessly with Windows desktops. That includes syncing across several Microsoft apps and easy access to Microsoft’s own One Drive cloud storage.
Size-wise, the XL in the name probably gives away the fact that the 640 XL is larger than average. Unless you have hands like shovels, it’s probably true that you’ll need two hands to do most operations here. But, if you’re an avid gamer or video freak, the large, 5.7” display will just blow your mind. The processor provides enough oomph to keep things smooth and lag-free. Once you get used to the extra size, you’ll wonder why you didn’t take the plunge before.
The Lumia 640 XL is just a fantastic smartphone which will keep you happy and content for years.
