We so often hear the phrase “award-winning” when talking about a whole variety of products and services. But, often, it means obscure awards that nobody’s heard of. The Motorola Atrix 4G is very different, however. It is not only award-winning but multi-award-winning. Those awards are from the Consumer Electronics Show held annually in Las Vegas. The CE Show is one of the biggest in the technology calendar.
So, the experts love the Atrix 4G. Yet we know what “experts” can be like, so are they right this time? Boy, are they ever!
Frankly, how Motorola has managed to pack so much great hardware into such a compact case needs to be seen to be believed. Weighing just 4.8oz, and about the same size as a very small candy bar. Yet they managed to cram in a dual-core processor, a 5MP camera, Full HD 1080p video capture, and dual-band Wi-Fi. As well as all the things you’d expect in a smartphone so bestowed with awards that even the ribbons weigh more than the phone itself. It makes the Motorola Atrix 4G a force to be reckoned with by anybody’s standards.
But, as our English friends like to say, the proof of the pudding is in the eating. So, is the Atrix 4G a tasty treat or something leaving a bitter taste? First, let’s see those hardware delights we mentioned.

The Taste Test
Is 4G really 4G?
First, we should mention the network capabilities of the Motorola Atrix 4G. The eagle-eyed amongst you might have noticed that there’s no mention of 4G, despite the device name. Simply put, the Atrix 4G isn’t 4G compatible, instead of having 3G HSDPA 14.4 capabilities. Which, although comparable to 4G in real-world tests, doesn’t qualify as true 4G. Then again, 4G LTE doesn’t qualify as true 4G either, but that never stopped anybody. The 3G data speeds are excellent, and the phone is easily capable of keeping up with the network speeds provided in the US. So, don’t let the lack of 4G put you off. Everything else that the Atrix 4G brings to the table easily cushions the blow by being more capable than any other phone in its class.
The Rest of the Icing
The screen is amongst the sharpest we’ve seen and compares favorably to Apple’s Retina standard, even in bright sunlight. The processor and integrated Tegra video GPU handle Full HD 1080p video playback without breaking a sweat. It can handle anything that the Android operating system throws at it. The 5MP camera with dual-LED flash produces print quality photos that are as good as any you’ll see, even from higher MP cameras. Its whopping 16GB of storage means you won’t need to add a MicroSD card for a while, even though you can.
Fingerprint Your Way in
The Atrix 4G includes a fingerprint sensor to unlock the device. Which, if you’ve ever used one, will make you very happy indeed. Being able to handle the phone with one hand from start to finish is another feature that you’ll never want to lose once you’ve experienced it. The fingerprint sensor has the bonus of making the phone even more secure. Unless you upset some “friends of ours” who might have a novel method of getting around that, of course…
Summary of the Motorola Atrix 4G
In short, the Atrix 4G is worth every one of the raft of awards it has won and is probably worth a few more. Universal positive reviews add yet more weight to the already lofty status of the device as a great smartphone. Its compact size makes it ideal for smaller (or younger) hands, without sacrificing any of the great features you’d expect from such a well-regarded smartphone.
