The Microsoft Lumia 950 is a flagship smartphone from one of the biggest names in technology. High-spec with top-line performance, the Lumia 950 will give any smartphone a run for its money. Achieving a Mr Aberthon ranking of 9.7/10, the Microsoft Lumia 950 is fully covered under our amazing 14 Day Returns Policy.
Back in the day, as people like to say, the Lumia was the flagship smartphone range from global mobile heroes Nokia. Unfortunately, the Finnish tech giant hit the skids when they failed to keep up with the likes of Apple and Samsung. Despite the problems, they continued to create wonderful devices, and the Lumia brand was bought by Microsoft as an exclusive Windows Mobile smartphone.
Microsoft used Lumia as the basis for their now cross-platform approach of total OS integration. With any Lumia phone, you could transfer seamlessly between phone and desktop with no loss of productivity. But the Lumia 950 went much further than just being a technological conduit for the desktop version of Windows.
Okay, so not really 950 reasons. It probably would have been easier if it was named the Lumia Several, to be honest. But, regardless, there really are lots of great reasons to own a Lumia 950.
The first reason is the build quality. Although not the anorexic titanium profile of the latest Samsung Galaxy or iPhone, it isn’t a problem. The Lumia 950 has been designed to sit in the hand perfectly, and it does just that. It is solid, without ever feeling heavy.
The 5.2″ AMOLED display has a 1440 x 2560 pixel resolution, with a huge 564ppi pixel density. This means detail and color are second to none whether you’re gaming, watching movies or just running social media. The display is protected from scratches and bumps by Corning Gorilla Glass.
The Lumia 950 runs Windows 10 Mobile. For those who have never used Windows Mobile, it is every bit a match for Android or iOS. Ask people why they love Windows Mobile and they’ll tell you that it’s easy to almost anything with a couple of taps. Compare that to the often multi-level deep settings in both its rivals, and it just becomes a delight to use.
Long-press on app icons started with Windows Mobile, and it shows. Getting apps to do just about anything you need is simple and intuitive.
While the likes of Apple ignoring Micro SD card slots altogether, and Samsung abandoning them before feeling the heat and bringing them back, Microsoft knew what people wanted. The Lumia 950 has 32GB of internal storage, with a further 256GB available via the card slot.
Nokia always led the pack when it came to smartphone camera quality, and Microsoft have continued the tradition. The 20MP rear camera has high-end Zeiss optics and a triple LED flash. It can also record 4K video with stereo sound. The 5MP front camera can record 1080p Full HD video with amazing quality.
Dual band, 802.11 b/g/n/ac wifi means maximum speed and device compatibility. Bluetooth 4.1 is present for in-car use or connecting to external accessories such as headphones or speakers. There’s a GPS unit included for maximum location accuracy when using maps or navigation.
Fast charging, wireless charging, 15GB of free Microsoft One Drive storage, and a universal USB-C connection make the Lumia 950 the ideal phone for home and travel. The huge 3000mAh battery gives a whopping 18hrs of talk time or 14 days standby time.
Don’t believe the naysayers who peddle the “Android or iOS only” line. The number of devices in use that run Windows 10 Mobile may not come close to Android or iOS, but it doesn’t mean that Windows Mobile can’t keep up. In fact, ask someone who has used all three, which is their favorite. The answer might surprise you.
As smartphones go, the Microsoft Lumia 950 is as well-built and as well-specified as any in its class. It may not have the social status of an iPhone X, yet it’s every bit as capable. It’s also a fraction of the price. Unless you really want to fund Apple and Google without ever really seeing all that much for your money, go ahead. If, though, you want a smartphone with amazing looks and performance, take a look at the Lumia 950.
