The X Venture is LG’s foray into tougher, more rugged smartphones. Whilst not the full-on rugged of some other devices, it does go further than standard phones. It also carries a host of features which make it a real competitor in the market place. The LG X Venture achieved a Mr Aberthon ranking of 9.5/10 and is fully covered by our 14 Day Returns Policy.
Often rugged phones are necessarily bulky. After all, if you add protection, you really have to add size and weight. In the X Venture, LG have taken a slightly different path. Instead of full on rugged, the phone takes most of what’s needed for everyday use, without the stuff required in really testing environments.
At first glance, you wouldn’t really know that the X Venture is a really tough cookie. A textured rear to the case, with a glass and metal front, the only giveaway to the strength are the chrome fenders on each side. These, along with other design elements make the X Venture shock resistant. As most shocks come from drops, this is a huge advantage for smartphone owners.
The X Venture measures 6.06 x 2.98 x 0.37 and weighs 5.89 oz. In anybody’s book, these are average for a smartphone. That LG have managed to build in the shockproofing we mentioned, plus water and dust proofing is a testament to the engineers involved.
The display is 5.2″, with a 16:9 ratio and a Full HD 1920 x 1080px resolution. The quality of the display on the X Venture is something else. Color rendition is excellent, and the quality is maintained right to the very edge.
The rear camera is 16MP, with LED Flash, geotagging, touch-to-focus, face recognition and HDR capability. It can record video at 1080p Full HD resolution at 30 frames per second. Image stabilization is possible when recording video, and there is an editor included so you can upload clips quickly.
The front camera is 5MP, and can also record video at Full HD resolution. This is a nice change from the lower resolutions normally possible with front cameras.
With an octa-core processor, even though chips are getting more efficient, it still requires a lot of power from the battery to drive it. Fortunately, LG recognized this and – somehow – managed to squeeze a 4100 mAh battery into the very slim case. In case you were wondering, such a large battery offers a lot of playtime. You can talk for up to 24 hrs or listen to music for 100 hrs. If you do nothing, standby will last for up to 30 days.
The battery has fast-charging capability, to allow up to 50% of charge in less than 50 minutes.
With 4G speeds, you’ll get the fastest mobile data transfer rates available. You also get Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n/ac meaning lightning fast home network speeds. This makes streaming HD movies or box sets an absolute breeze on a broadband connection. There will be no lag or stuttering as a result of the X venture not keeping up.
As well as the speed of the connections, you get Bluetooth, GPS, NFC and an FM radio. Connecting to a handsfree system or bluetooth speakers takes just seconds. GPS means location and navigation services are at your fingertips.
The LG X Venture has a fingerprint scanner on the front. As well as the added security, once you get used to the convenience of unlocking the phone with your fingerprint, you’ll never look back.
32GB of storage is already available, with a MicroSD card slot offering another 256GB if you need it. This is where that 100hrs of music playback comes into its own.
Running on Android, the world’s most popular mobile operating system, you have access to all the glory the Google Play store has to offer, as well as the great features provided by the OS itself. This includes Smart Lock, which allows you to specify trusted places where your phone will remain unlocked. If you are at home and constantly having to unlock your phone with the pattern, you’ll know how great not having to do that will be. Even the great fingerprint sensor takes second place to just swiping up on the home screen.
Legendary LG good looks, extra protection without the extra weight and size, massive battery for easy all-day use, and tons more. The LG X Venture is a great smartphone by anybody’s standards, and especially at this price. Forget the hype you may see about other phones, the X Venture will match them step for step, and do it all without you freezing in horror if you do so much as drop it onto a pillow from 6 inches.
It’s tough, it’s fast, and it’s ready to go where you go.
