The Stylo 2 Plus is LG’s second generation “phablet” release. With a big 5.7″ screen, both work and play are made simple and satisfying. Although larger than the average smartphone, the Stylo 2 Plus is still comfortable to hold in “normal” use. Covered by our no-quibble, 14 Day Returns Policy, the LG Stylo 2 Plus achieved a Mr Aberthon ranking of 9.4/10.
If you’re used to a standard smartphone, the Stylo 2 Plus will look and feel huge. But, at 6.10 x 3.13 x 0.29 inches, it isn’t overly big. After a day or two, the bigger form actually starts to feel really good in the hand. The LG Stylo 2 Plus also weighs just 5.07 ounces. This is actually lighter than many smaller smartphones.
The power and volume buttons are on the rear of the case, below the camera. This is another unusual feature that might take a little adjustment on your part. They are, though, excellently positioned, and sit right under your finger tips when holding the phone.
The CPU driving everything along nicely is an 8 core, 1.4 GHz processor. The battery is 3000 mAh, and offers over 20 hrs of talk time and 19 days of standby.
There is 16GB of storage available out of the box. This is easy to expand with the Micro SD card slot, up to a whopping 2 terabytes.
The G5 is able to take advantage of the Android Smart Lock feature. You can set trusted locations or other devices, or use facial recognition to determine whether the phone should lock or not. It might not sound like much, but not having to use the pattern or fingerprint to unlock when at home is a real bonus.
The display is, if you come from something like an iPhone 4 or SE, enormous. With a 1280 x 720px HD resolution, watching movies or gaming is an absolute delight. It is also covered by Corning Gorilla Glass for extra protection against scratches and knocks.
The rear camera is 13MP and has LED flash. You can capture Full HD 1080p video at 30 frames per second, and there is a video editor built-in to the OS. This is often a feature missing from smartphones, so it’s good that LG haven’t missed the opportunity.
The front 5MP camera can also capture Full HD 1080p video, and has a built in selfie light. It’s not a flash, but the screen will become very bright while the shutter operates to add light to the image. You can also take selfies with gestures or by face recognition. This makes awkward reaching for the shutter button a thing of the past.
4G is here, as you’d expect. This will give you the fastest possible data speeds on a mobile connection. Wi-Fi 802.1 b/g/n also means very quick data speeds across networks.
There is also Bluetooth for connection to handsfree systems or bluetooth accessories. GPS allows location and navigation easily, and NFC means you can transfer files to similarly equipped devices. With NFC you can also use Apple and Google Pay in stores which accept the method.
The stylus on the Stylo 2 Plus is a little different to many you may find. As an example, the pen on the Samsung Galaxy phablet range are wonders of micro technology. This means they can be very expensive to replace. The pen with the Stylo 2 Plus is a more standard affair altogether, and is not absolutely necessary to use the device.
When you remove the pen from the holder, the Stylo 2 Plus vibrates, and opens a couple of very useful apps for writing, drawing or other media purposes. The pen works really well, and is much easier than using a finger to write on the screen. Handwriting recognition also works pretty well, although it can be hit and miss if you have a particularly “free flowing” style.
If you like the idea of a phablet, but don’t really know where to start, start here. The LG Stylo 2 Plus is an excellent first step into oversized smartphones. The big display is excellent, and everything works together beautifully.
There is a slight adjustment period while you get used to the larger size, but you will just stop noticing after a day or two. The performance of the Stylo 2 Plus is everything you’d expect from LG, and it looks great as well.
