Product Description
Most smartphones these days will tout the fact that they have a polycarbonate shell. What they mean is “plastic”. This is fine, actually, and can help to reduce both weight and cost. However, once you get your hands on the all-metal LG G5, you’ll know what others are missing out on. With an edge-to-edge display and subtly curved corners, the LG G5 is a great-looking smartphone.
With its slightly curved edges on the back, it sits well in the hand and doesn’t cause aching fingers over long periods of use.
LG G5 Specs
The unique feature of the LG G5 is its modular design. The design of the bottom section of the G5 means it can be removed. This gives access not only to a replaceable battery but to add-on accessories offering different capabilities. In truth, the list of add-ons available is small. There is a camera grip, a DAC Audio unit, and a 360-degree camera. But, even if you don’t need this interchangeability, simply forget about it. The G5 is good enough in its own right, even without the modules feature.
LG G5 Cameras
Both rear and front cameras are excellent. The front camera is 8MP and can record video at Full HD 1080p resolution. The real star, though, is the dual-lens arrangement of the rear camera. Along with the standard 16MP camera, there’s an 8MP wide-angle lens. This offers a view of 135 degrees, which is exceptional for any camera lens, let alone a smartphone.
You can even take both a standard and wide-angle photo at the same time. This makes a very unusual effect, as though the standard section is zoomed in slightly. It might not be practical for everyday use, but it’s a great way of taking selfies.
The rear camera can also capture 2160p video, as well as 0180p video.
Display
The 5.3″ display is a 1440 x 2560px resolution. Whilst, not 4K, it is superb quality and is as good as any we see from the likes of Apple and Samsung. There is an always-on display, showing the time and notifications. Even when the phone is locked, this glance screen remains on. It may seem like overkill, but with more of us using our phones to check the time than a watch, it’s invaluable.
Connectivity
The LG G5 has all the connectivity features you’d expect. Wi-Fi 802.11 up to ac speeds, Bluetooth 4.2, GPS, NFC, and even Infra-red, which can be very useful.
There’s even an FM radio, allowing genuine radio listening instead of apps for often different online broadcasts.
LG G5 Battery and Processor
As we touched on, the battery is user-replaceable. If you like to keep hold of your smartphone, this is incredibly good to have. batteries do start to fail, in time and, being able to switch it for a new one is great.
At 2800mAh, you will get 20hrs talk time or 400hrs standby off a single charge. Speaking of charging, wireless charging is available with a separate charging pad.
The quad-core processor performs very well, even under heavy strain. We noticed no lag or stuttering on even the most recent games or high-resolution movies. There’s 32GB of storage built-in, and you can add a further 400GB via the MicroSD card slot if you so desire.
Summary
There’s nothing not to like about the LG G5. From the design to the hardware, to the way it’s all put together, it’s a winner. The module design is useful for some, not so useful for others. But that doesn’t mean not needing it means not needing the G5. Without the modular design, it is still an excellent smartphone.
The specifications match almost anything available, but at a lower price. We heartily recommend the LG G5.
