The Dura Range
Dura, as in “durable”. But to simply consider the Dura range of phones from Kyocera as durable doesn’t do them justice. Like the Kyocera Dura XV Plus, they are hard as nails, tough as old boots, strong as an ox. Choose your idiom and you won’t be far off.
Kyocera have made a significant name for themselves with their Dura rugged phones. The full range is surprisingly large, with features and prices to suit just about anyone. From full-screen smartphones to simple flip phones, there’s a Dura for all needs and expectations.
At the higher end of the Dura flip phone design is the Dura XV Plus, quite possibly one of the toughest flip phones around.
Many phones today are rated IP67 or IP68. These ratings tell us that they are water ingress resistant for up to 30 minutes in 3 or 6 feet of water, respectively. This, while a very good thing, often isn’t enough. Lots of people drop their phone every day, whilst very few actually go swimming with them. With the best will (and marketing) in the world, IP68 isn’t going to protect anything from being dropped onto a hard surface. This is where the Dura XV Plus comes in.
The Dura XV Plus goes way beyond just being waterproof, although it is that, too. It complies with the MIL-STD 810G standard. This, as the abbreviated name might imply, is a military grade standard. All items used in every aspect of the military must pass several tests before being accepted into use. The 810G part of the standard covers many non-ballistic tests.
In the case of the Dura XV Plus, these tests include resistance to water, dust, impact, thermal shock, high and low temperatures, vibration and more. It’s one of the best phones, of any design, for allowing you to have the confidence to take it into just about any environment. Tough jobs really need a tough phone, and the Kyocera Dura XV Plus meets that need perfectly.
The Dura XV Plus utilizes a bespoke Smart Sonic Receiver. Normally, any background noise during calls forms part of the sound signal going back and forth. When the signal reaches the earpiece of the receiving phone, they are turned into sounds that we can hear. The Dura XV Plus, however, takes a different approach. Instead of creating the sound our ears hear, which then absorbs any noise in our environment, the Smart Sonic Receiver sends vibrations directly to the eardrum. That way, providing the earpiece is secure to your ear, all you will hear is the sound from the other end of the conversation. This system eliminates almost all background noise, providing a superior experience in even the noisiest environment.
Noise cancelling dual-mics also means the highest call quality going the other way. Powerful dual front speakers mean no environment is too noisy for the Dura XV Plus.
The Dura XV Plus also gets you to who – and where – you need to be. With built in navigation, getting around has never been easier. If you are in a work environment where collective communication is important, that’s not a problem, either. With Push To Talk (PTT), the Dura XV Plus provides a walkie talkie experience to similarly equipped phones.
Construction sites, engineering plants and much more benefit greatly from radio systems which contact many people at once. You no longer need a separate system, the Dura XV Plus will do it all for you.
The Nuts and Bolts
With all the stuff above, it’s easy to forget that the Dura XV Plus is actually a pretty great phone in its own right. There’s a full color 2.4″ main display, and a secondary 1.08″ mono display on the front for notifications. The camera is a generous 5MP offering, and has LED flash and autofocus, both uncommon on flip phones. The Dura XV Plus will also play just about any audio or video file format in common use today.
512MB of storage is available already, and there’s a Micro SD Card slot for cards holding up to 32GB of extra storage space. The phone closes down to just 4.13″ x 2.15″ x 0.98″. Such slim dimensions are rare in any flip phone design phone, especially when we’re talking about the features included in the Dura XV Plus.
Pushing it all along is a 1500mAh battery. On a single charge, it will provide nearly 8hrs talk time or over 18 days standby. Just perfect for those long days on site or when traveling.
All in all, when it comes to flip phones, you will struggle to find better than the Kyocera Dura XV Plus. Small in size, but huge in features and durability. It might not quite be bullet proof, but it’s just about almost anything else proof.
